Blog It Out!

Posted by Rich on September 7, 2007

Welcome to my new and first blog. I decided to start creating a blog because it would allow me to take down my thoughts while at the same time killing time at work.

This is simply an introductory post. Every update will follow starting with the post directly below this one. Thanks for Reading. Also feel free to e-mail me via the contact link on the left side of the page. Thanks.

Daily Thoughts

Posted by Rich on September 13, 2007

I know that I said blogging about sports was irrelelvent because it is just that, in a day or two it is irrelevent. These thoughts however involve sports indirectly. My friend Russ's 24th birthday is on friday and our Cleveland Indians just happen to be playing the Royals in the middle of the final homestand of the season. So, per tradition we are planning on attending the game on friday in cleveland.

Afterwards, we plan on going out to the warehouse district and make an attempt at getting into the bar's that we failed to get into in February, when we were up there for me and my friend Brandon's birthday. Incidently, we failed to get in because we had some underage attendees, not their fault of course, however Cleveland is not Youngstown and you actually need to be of age to get into bar's, even if you are a girl.

Something other than sports

Posted by Rich on September 10, 2007

I will try and blog today about something other than sports, b/c it is such a constantly changing topic, it is hard to blog on regularly and not be out of the loop 2 days later. So I suppose I will blog about something other than sports, such as what is going on in my life.

First off, let me start off with the most recent thing on my mind which is the awful debacle that was the MTV Video Music Awards that aired last night. The first problem I noticed was that show did not have an actual host. To kick off the show post-child Britney Spears performed and showed what happens to you physically and mentally when you marry a backup dancer, have 2 children, party with Paris Hilton, get strung out on cocaine, shave your head and try to go back to your pre-incident self. It doesn't work.

Britney's poor choice of outfit accented her round mid-section, large thighs and poor overall appearance. Aside from her appearance, her performance was very poor. She lip synched her entire performance, part of which she did not lip synch the right words. Her dance moves were very slow and deliberate as if she were in some type of trance. This was exaggerated by the fact she was surrounded by professional dancers moving at a high rate of speed.

Whoever choreographed, dressed and booked Britney to perform on this show, should be fired. I think this was an attempt to revive Britney's career which failed miserably, similar to her un-announced House of Blues performances under the stage name "M&M".

After the Britney "Poor-formance", Sarah Silverman took the stage, who I had thought was hosting. I then discovered this was the only time we would see Silverman and on this occasion that was a good thing. Silverman is usually one of my favorite, brutally honest comics.

In this case however, her lackluster monologue poked fun at Britney, whom had just got off stage, as well as her Children. She then proceeded to roast Paris Hilton and Amy Winehouse with less than hilarious comments. For much of her monologue the crowd remained silent, which is pretty damn hard to do in a room that large. Sarah then introduced the first presenters and left the stage never to be seen again.

Basically the show was in the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas. Apparently, someone thought it would be a good idea to have the show in several different rooms, instead of in one place. On top of that, we are not going to appear to have any order or schedule to the show. We are simply going to show random performances, in random rooms at random times. It was like they had a die that they were rolling to decide who they were going to show performing.

There were very few total and impressive performances with the exception of Chris Brown's table dancing montage coupled with his own song as well as a collaboration with Rihanna singing an excerpt from "umbrella" and a tribute to Michael Jackson performing dance moves to "Billie Jean". Linkin Park's performance of "Bleed It Out" was also a bright spot, however it was held in a completely disconnected location at another club in Las Vegas.

Overall, the show itself was awful. Outside of the two performances mentioned, and Kid Rock and Tommy Lee throwing down for Pamela Anderson's (cough) honor, I am certainly happy that I didn't invest 2 hours of the evening in the show, instead forwarding through it on DVR in about 40 minutes or so.Shame on you MTV!You managed to ruin one of the last few things that had yet to completely suck.Good Job Stupid!

Sports, and other thoughts

Posted by Rich on September 7th, 2007

I've got a lot of things I want to get down in here so I'm going to try to keep them in the most coherent thought grouping possible. First thing I want to talk about is sports. The Indians have been on fire as of late and have opened up a 6 game lead in the central division over the Tigers. The Indians are 18-5 in their last 23 games.

On August 18th, the Indians and Tigers were tied for the lead in the central division. Since then they have been annihilating the competition. A combination of the Indians bat's, lights out pitching and an excellent combination of Betancourt and Borowski in the back end of the bullpen have been coming through at the most crucial point of the season.

Detroit, on the other hand has watched their lead in the central as well as the wildcard expire. Injury prone in the last few weeks, the Tigers have had an excuse to be playing sub-par ball even though they are not out of it, they need to start winning some games and hope the Indians or Yankees/Mariners stop playing as well, otherwise the defending AL Champs will be watching the playoffs from home in a few weeks.

In other sports news, the addictive pastime known as college football kicked off its season last week with one HUGE UPSET and several other surprises. Let's start with my perennial favorite The Ohio State University. The Buckeyes opened the season with FCS (formally Div I-AA) powerhouse, My Alma Mater, Youngstown State. YSU was not expected to win this game however I feel they thought they would be able to put up much more of a fight than what they were able to muster. YSU was able to put up 3 points on the board in the 1st half to go into the locker room at half time down 21-3.

It appeared that YSU came out of half time fired up and ready to play, however after driving down the field and adding another field goal, the Buckeyes came back and added 2 more touchdowns and a field goal. Jim Tressel beat his former team, players and coaches rather handily; however it could have been much worse. Final score: OSU 38 YSU 6.

This week OSU takes on the University of Akron at the Horseshoe in Columbus. Kick-Off scheduled for noon on Saturday. The game will only be televised once again on the Big Ten Network, which means good news for local sports bars, not so good for those of us who enjoy watching the game at home. However, this will be the last OSU game on the Big 10 Network for at least 2 weeks. Thank God!
